Hi, I like the site!!
Here are responses from 3 of Phil Hingley’s German students
at Groby Community College.
1. Daniel Fretter:
I believe that christmas is a former religious festival. As religion
becomes less prominent in society, the importance of religion at
christmas is less.
It comes from the celebration of Christs birth.
The fact that everyone is happy and that we meet lots
of people makes it good.
It is becoming a celebration for everyone rather than
just for christians.
For me it is not just presents, it is something that brings
people together.
2.Helen Jones:
A celebration of Jesus’ birth, celebrated by christians and
non christians
Christians believe that Jesus was born on chritmas day.
The giving of presents makes it good as everybody is happy.
It is, unfortunately, cheapened by americanisms which
make christmas profitable and even sometimes tacky.
3.Tom Mee
Christmas is something which has changed over the years from being
just a religious festival to something enjoyed by most,
regardless of religous beliefs.
It is also a commercial venture with so much advertising
and the need to buy expensive presents, this is not what
is meant
christmas was intended as but is how it has developed.
